The Doulas Role...

is one of attentiveness and of total service to the wants and needs of a woman as she labors. The doula offers physical, emotional and informational support to the woman giving birth and to any partners that are present.

Throughout the duration of labor and birth, the doula provides continuous care. She is trained to give help and advice with physical comfort measures such as breathing, relaxation, movement and positioning. She also assists families with obtaining information about their various options as labor progresses and helps to facilitate communication with their clinical care team.

Perhaps, most importantly, the doula understands the emotional needs of a woman giving birth and is there to provide ongoing reassurance and support.
